I am really surprised to learn that Thailand's cultural ministry threats to sue to Singapore's organizer for Songkran festival in Singapore this year. Songkran means water throwing festival for people who live in Thailand and Myanmar. I am not sure which country had earlier one between them. We, Myanmar migrant people try every year to hold water festival here to please our home sicking minds while we're working abroad. But I never think of any issue, such as hijacking other country's culture. Perhaps it is because our own people are organizing in Singapore. For this year case, Thailand is fallen into political crisis in deep and Singapore is trying to hold said festival for first ever time. Thai officials see it hijacking their culture to attract tourists.
Soon after aforesaid news is surfaced in local news, I heard another news that Singaporean will boycott the water throwing festival as an attempt to prevent wasting water and save water amap due to this year prolong dry spell. I am not sure if the two news are related or not. But Myanmar community will continue to hold water festival in our own way. It include free foods and drinks to all participants. There will be some famous Myanmar Thingyan dancers to entertain incoming visitors. The special seasonal songs will make people happy in new year time. Our purpose of throwing water each other is to wash out all sin from preceding year. Anyhow, water festival is a happy moment occasion for any age person from all walks of life. No matter who you are and which religion you are practicing. All people are welcome to participate our new year festival. I could guarantee that you'll be happy and find it worth for your time for sure. Because the best thing in life are shared.
