Residents of Kunming, China are protesting for the S$ 4bn oil refinery project at their home town, today newspaper's China & India section published and I read it interestingly. The factory will be designed to produce 10 million tons of refined oil annually and residents see it hell at their green environment. One said, we love blue skies with clouds as well as fresh air. They are demanding their government to reveal the plan to public before go ahead. Now provincial authority and developer company are holding meeting to address people's concern. What make me immediate concern is that what if the said refinery factory would be moved to our land. I am not sure if our authority would protect our environment which is already put under harm by trans-border oil & natural gas pipe line projects.
The news also reveal that the refinery factory project is part of Myanmar-China pipe line which is meant to open soon. It added the displeasure of people from both sides of border against the project and Myanmar side has announced for potential delay due to certain reason. As a Myanmar citizen, I perfectly know that my fellow citizens are extremely unhappy with Chinese development. On our map, Chinese's pipe line run across diagonally through our heartland. It look ugly and make our people heart broken. Some forest area has been cut to pave the way for pipeline project. Some farmers are yet to receive their compensation amount despite the project is closed to open soon. Some environmentalists highlight the environmental effect by the project. We knew that there would be some refinery factories developed by China before they pump out to China. Our authority see such development to create jobs rather than environment perspective. We should look for next generations to come rather than short term solving problems. Hopefully, our authorities will resist any development attached to danger with our environment.
