Myanmar's former prime minister Khin Nyunt, who was freed from house arrest in January, says he personally intervened to save the life of democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi nine years ago.
In one of his first interviews in over seven years, the former spy chief said he saved Mrs Suu Kyi's convoy from a pro-junta mob on the outskirts of Depayin Township in Sagaing Division on May 30, 2003.
The death toll from the Depayin Massacre has never been confirmed, but the Myanmar opposition claims up to 50 people died in the attack.
"I sent my men to snatch her from the mob that night and they brought her to safety to a nearby army cantonment," he said in an interview with the Bangkok Post Sunday.
Khin Nyunt said he regarded Mrs Suu Kyi as his younger sister and had "brotherly admiration" for her resoluteness.
